Many people have different variations of the definitions Homestead and Cooking. To some people and if this is you, I mean no disrespect at all, but some people are more comfortable opening a box and using only boxed or frozen meals. That’s ok if that’s what you like. But for us we don’t like it and would rather put the extra work in to have healthier, better tasting food.
To us the work is worth the difference. And as a mom and a new Grammie, it means the world to me to have my kids say “Mom, is this yours? If it’s not, I’m not eating it!” Or “Mom, I’m craving this or that can you please make it the way you always do?”, Of course I will.
Our youngest son Ryelin asks me questions all the time about the olden days, and what it was like to grow up with horse and buggy and without electricity. I kinda wish, I kinda wish. I am completely unsure of where he has gotten this idea from except that maybe its from the homestead style lifestyle we live. I think it reminds him of When Calls the Heart or Little House on the Prairie, which is more than fine with me. We really want to teach them the meaningful things in life and to us that isn’t spending all of our time on a ball field or in a gymnasium. It is with our feet in the dirt, our hands and fingernails looking most terrible but hearts satisfied with the way of life. Depending on ourselves to supply most of our food and knowing exactly what is in each thing we eat.
Now back to topic….. Homestead cooking to me isn’t going to the store grabbing a pack of Ground Beef, box of spaghetti noodles, and a jar of pasta sauce and going home throwing it together and serving it to your family. I have done this and I am not saying there is anything wrong with it. But what I consider to be homestead cooking is that you are using beef that you raised yourself, or bought from a local butcher (not mass produced grocery store), making your own noodles, and your own pasta sauce made from home grown tomatoes, peppers, basil and other herbs. The blood sweat and tears of putting a complete meal on the table for your family that doesn’t have the preservatives and extra added ingredients that you can’t say or spell!! How healthy is it that you are made to believe that all the ingredients in the food we eat is the best for you?
But did you know that you 98% of all of the foods that you want to eat, you can make at home! Pizza rolls, Hot pockets, burritos, caramel, butterscotch, ice cream, cream cheese. I know that you can find all kinds of recipes online but I am here to show you more recipes in one place that will allow you to connect to the old way of life. Humanity has survived much longer before the mass production of food and medication! Let’s go back to that and boycott the preservatives!
