Got ya chair? Tea? Good let’s talk about the importance of Dad on the homestead. Or man on the homestead!
I love my husband and the father of my children and the Grampy to My Grammy to our grand son. I love watching him work in the field, enjoying running the tractor or equipment. Teaching our kids to do something or even me. Or when he offers to help me do something!
Not only are men the Head of the House for tax reasons and most of the time they bring home the most money. But these Farm, Ranch, Homestead guys are the best of the best. Yes we all disagree, and if you think that homestead, farm, ranch stuff is all fun and games, or laughter and sunshine. You are wrong. We disagree over the hand signals given to put this machine here or there, open this gate or the other, get out of the way of the animal coming at you, or the direction you need to turn your wheels to back your trailer or to back under the trailer to hook up. But it all comes out in the wash. That is usually left in the dryer, on the table, or in the clean pile on the floor. At least it’s clean.
These men or dads are the greatest of the great influences to our kids. Our little boys want to be them when they grow up because they can do anything in this world except give birth to a human. They can help any animal out of the fence, any animal birth their offspring, praying the whole time they stay alive. They ride on uncomfortable equipment, tractors and in bumpy fields to bring in the harvest for the year. They improvise and they build things that you wouldn’t have ever imagined could be built, mostly out of scrap materials and that trailer load of stuff that could go to the dump or eventually be used for something.
These men fight the conditions of every single season that we have. In the spring its getting the ground ready for new plants and getting the equipment ready for the start of the harvest. In the summer its putting up hay, tending to whatever crops are in the ground. In the fall, the end of the harvest when you can finally maybe see the light at the end of the tunnel. In the winter, feeding the animals in the freezing cold. Busting frozen water troughs, and keeping all the breathing animals breathing and thriving.
That’s what these guys live for. We are thankful for our fellas, and occassionally on some days we may say we want to trade them for a softer guy, but who are we kidding? We wouldn’t know what to do with a different man. We will fight you tooth and nail for this man and all he does for us.
We complain about how late he is working. But it’s him who didn’t always get a hot supper. It’s him who didn’t always get to relax before bed. Most of the time it’s a cold shower, and fall dead in the bed. They work daylight to dark. Fixing anything and everything that needs to be fixed. Building whatever needs to be built. Because on top of everything else they do, guess what? At some point or another we always ask them to build something new or go grab another animal that we probably don’t need. But he growls about it but travels on anyway.
The love this man has for our God, the land, the animals, our family and friends is beyond what anyone can imagine. He growls about the struggles in each season, task that has to be done, everytime the cows are out or an animal dies. But guess what? He doesn’t give up. He keeps digging and fighting for what he has for his family. He keeps striving to do better and be a better influence to his kids and grandkids. He wants to teach them the way of life on the farm. What to do and what not to do like he did. Save them some struggles. He wants to watch them thrive and grow to be Faithful children of God, to love the land like he does, use the land for the benefit of knowledge and health, and love their family like he does. Unconditionally.
So everyday not just today we are thankful for the Dads that are in our lives that work so hard so we can be happy and healthy. We are thankful for the late nights, the struggles every day that they continue fighting through for us. We are thankful for the influence they have teaching our kids and grandkids the love of the animals and land. And most importantly to love our God like he does and to always come in and kiss Momma.
This is the importance of the dad on the homestead. Why we love him and thank him for his sacrifices. We sure are thankful for our Hubby, Dad, and Grampy. We sure hope that he knows how much he is loved and appreciated!!
